Created by Luke Hutchie and Matthew Finlan, the eight-episode unscripted series filmed in various Ontario haunts this past summer, for streaming on CBC Gem in 2024

Creators Luke Hutchie and Matthew Finlan

October 10, 2023 – CBC has greenlit GHOSTING WITH LUKE HUTCHIE AND MATTHEW FINLAN (8×30), a new unscripted comedy series from Blue Ant Studios, that follows Hutchie (EZRA) and Finlan (Orphan: First Kill, EZRA), two actors known exclusively for their work in the horror genre, as they step off script and into their own real-life thriller on their quest to decipher if Canada’s most haunted places are truly haunted. The paranormal series filmed this summer in haunted locales around Ontario and will launch on the free CBC Gem streaming service in winter 2024.

In each episode, the amateur ghost-wrangling duo are joined by celebrity guests, to meet locals who claim to have experienced a real-life haunting. While investigating the renowned site, they see if it lives up to the local ghost lore as they work to reach a verdict of “haunted” or “not” alongside their celebrity guest.

Hutchie is most credited with creating and starring in the hit short-form series “EZRA”. Hutchie portrayed the titular role of Ezra Grey, acting alongside Zoe De Grand Maison (Orphan Black, Riverdale), Veronika Slowikowska (What We Do in the Shadows) and Finlan. EZRA recently won the Web Series Canada Honourable Mention Award at 2023 T.O Web Fest.

Finlan starred in the highly anticipated sequel to the 2009 hit film ‘Orphan’ starring Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles, Orphan: First Kill. Finlan recently acted alongside Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk in their slasher comedy Hell of a Summer which premiered at this year’s TIFF Midnight Madness.

“We are excited to collaborate with CBC, along with Matt and Luke, and a surprise weekly guest star as they embark on an adventure to discover forgotten spirits in some of Canada’s most scariest haunts,” says Jennifer Harkness, SVP, Unscripted Development and Production, Blue Ant Studios. “Their fun-loving personalities and senses of humour promise to infuse a unique and entertaining twist to the paranormal genre.”

“This is such a fun way to celebrate and explore our local communities,” says Jennifer Dettman, Executive Director, Unscripted Content, CBC. “Luke and Matt have an infectious energy that brings a unique spin to the paranormal genre. Ghosting will make audiences laugh while keeping them on the edge of their seats.”

Cooper.

Davey & Jonesie’s Locker (10 x 30; marblemedia for Hulu (US) & Amazon Prime Video, Canada, Australia & New Zealand)

The original series follows Davey and Jonesie, two lovable, eccentric best friends who have always felt out of step with their peers and the banal backdrop of their high school existence. When they discover their locker is actually a portal to the multiverse, they’re more than ready to escape their teenage prison of mediocrity in favour of new horizons. But the joke is on them when they end up in bizarre, alternate versions of their high school, surrounded by offbeat versions of their classmates. Fortunately, these audacious and creative besties are ready to make the most of this vacation from reality by leaving their mark on every universe they visit, even if it means choosing interdimensional chaos while they’re at it.

Creator/Showrunner Evany Rosen (New Eden, Baroness Von Sketch Show, The Spencer Sisters) is tapping into her distinctive comedic voice to create this new original series that stars the talented Veronika Slowikowska (F/X’s What We Do In The Shadows) as Davey, and Jaelynn Thora Brooks (CBC’s Heartland), as Jonesie.

Doomlands, Season 2 (20 x 11’|10 x 22′; Look Mom! Productions for Roku)

From the irreverent mind of Josh O’Keefe, Doomlands is Roku’s first-ever adult animated series. The show started as creator O’Keefe’s university film project turned crowd-funded pilot and was later developed by Josh Bowen and Look Mom! Productions with help from writers Mark Little and Kayla Lorette. The second season of this quirky scripted, animated adult comedy follows the misadventures of Danny Doom, his sidekick Lhandi, their mobile pub and a travelling band of bar flies as they wander through a desert wasteland. All are back to face ruthless desert gangs, memory-stealing creeps and the ultimate spectacle in the wastelands, The Edge Race.

Armadillo Avalanche (10 x 30; marblemedia in paid development)

Currently in paid development with two scripts available, this animated action-comedy is available for international co-production and pre-sale partnerships opportunities. When an all-girl tweenage punk band accidentally rip a hole in the fabric of the universe with their music, they find themselves imbued with superpowers, fighting monsters, and rocking out while doing it together. The series evolved from marbleKids’ original digital shorts of the same name, funded through the Shaw Rocket/Canada Media Fund Shorts Program. Created by Celeste Koon and showrun by Evan Thaler Hickey, the series is inspired by the power of pop punk music and what you can do if you commit to something bigger than yourself.

Generation Mars (8 x 60; marblemedia in paid development).

Based on Douglas D. Meredith’s book series, Generation Mars chronicles humanity’s perilous extraterrestrial endeavour, from the unique point of view of an extraordinary family will deliver an optimistic heart-pounding thrill ride, based on hard science, that will inspire adventure-seekers of all ages.? Cooper of Mezo Entertainment has signed on as the project’s showrunner.

This year’s MIPCOM highlights:

True Crime

The Playboy Bunny Murder (2 x 60′ HD; Future Studios, Soho Studios, ITVX)

A cinematic and evocative true-crime series, in which journalist and author Marcel Theroux takes viewers to the enchantment and exoticism of the Playboy Club in London’s swinging seventies. It’s the most infamous club of Hugh Hefner’s notorious empire and the backdrop for one of the world’s most enduring unsolved murder cases of four young women. Theroux’s fearless investigation takes him around the world searching for suspects, witnesses and family members still haunted by these tragic murders.

The Murder Retrial (4 x 60′ HD; Screendog Productions, Channel 4)

A gripping new format that examines and tests the jury system. Filmed over ten days, a real murder trial is recreated by actors word-for-word from the original transcripts, and two randomly-chosen juries, neither of whom are aware of the other, are asked to judge. This ground-breaking social experiment asks profound questions about how we administer justice, by putting the jury system itself on trial. The case itself is the story of a man who admits he killed his wife, but whose defence maintains that he lost control, and is therefore not guilty of murder. Will the two different juries agree, or will they show how subjective the system truly is?

Body in the Suitcase (2 x 60’|1 x 120′ HD; Transistor Films)

A gripping, two-part special, that takes viewers deep into the shocking twists and turns of an unprecedented case in June 2021, in which a polite, middle-class church-going woman, Jemma Mitchell, is suspected of murdering her close friend. CCTV footage tracks Jemma dragging a large suitcase towards her friend Deborah Chong’s home. Hours later, Mitchell is recorded leaving the area, dragging two visibly heavy suitcases. Two weeks later Deborah’s decapitated body is discovered. The series includes first-hand accounts from family members, eyewitnesses and police.

Documentary

Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe (1 x 90; marblemedia & Hawkeye Pictures, Prime Video, in association with CBC)

A TIFF 2023 selection and winner of the People’s Choice Documentary Award, this heartwarming feature documentary is based on the life and career of legendary Canadian children’s entertainer, Ernie Coombs, or, as he is more commonly known by millions of fans, Mr Dressup. The documentary is a touching look at the origins and history of one of Canada’s most beloved CBC children’s shows, Mr. Dressup, which enriched the lives of five generations and built a legacy of kindness, patience, inclusiveness and creativity during its 4,000-episode run over 29 years on CBC. The film combines never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with series puppeteers, the Coombs family and other notable Canadians, all sharing the impact the series had on them. (TORONTO, ON) September 21, 2023 – From students toppling and beheading the statue of Egerton Ryerson to protestors tearing down monuments of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Sir John A. Macdonald, the summer of 2021 ignited an era of reckoning and re-evaluation of our past. Commissioned by the CBC and produced by Saloon Media, a Blue Ant Media production company, Inside The Statue Wars is a powerful new documentary that examines these events and offers compelling perspectives on how these statues could symbolize dreams or nightmares, depending on your point of view. The documentary premieres on The Passionate Eye,  Wednesday, October 4 on CBC Gem and CBC TV at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT)

Inside the Statue Wars hears from the key players on the front lines, many of whom are sharing their stories for the first time, including: The History Buff who is a staunch defender of John A Mcdonald; The Professor who explains people’s attachment to the monuments; The Statue-slayer who beheaded Egerton Ryerson’s statue; The Poet who posed in provocative photos with Ryerson’s head; The Artist, a renowned Cowichan/Syilx First Nations artist who is also a survivor of the Kamloops Indian Residential School; The Photographer whose work challenges the messages statues send about identity, power and belonging; The Activist, the face of a powerful Indigenous youth movement that is challenging colonial narratives; and The Land Defender a multi-hyphenate, young, Indigenous land defender, singer and award-winning actress from Tla’amin Nation.

This documentary explores the why behind these events and gives voice to the two sides: sovereignty and equity-seeking communities who say it is a long overdue reckoning and argue that statues are relics of a racist era that must be removed before we can reach reconciliation; and those who say statue toppling is vandalism and based on a dangerous distortion of history.

For many, the statues glorified individuals who had caused enormous harm to Indigenous communities in particular. In Canada, many of the locations of former statues became make-shift memorials for Indigenous children. More than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children from across the country were separated from their families and communities, forced to attend Indian Residential Schools, often located far from their homes, and many never returned home.

While the issue has gone to sleep since 2021, the team of creators hope this documentary will restart the conversation.

“Few people think about statues until they come down,” says Producer and Director,  Elizabeth St. Philip. “We know what got toppled. This documentary is about who brought them down and why.”

“It’s a piece about those that feel safe in public spaces and the stories of some of the people that don’t,” says Yuma Dean Hester, Producer and DOP. “No matter where we traveled and who we spoke with, everyone had a strong opinion and personal story to tell.”

“Like so many Canadians, I was deeply moved by events in 2020-21, when statues and monuments across the country became a focal point of protest,” says Producer Steve Gamester. “Two years later, the underlying issues have not gone away, the country is in limbo and we hope the film can contribute to the unfinished discussion.”

Inside the Statue Wars, produced and created by Saloon Media’s Elizabeth St. Philip (9/11 Kids, The Colour of Beauty),  Steve Gamester (9/11 Kids, Cheating Hitler: Surviving the Holocaust) and Yuma Dean Hester, a founding member and Creative Director with Bawaadan Collective, a group of like-minded Indigenous artisans and accomplices, who develop collaborative approaches to modern artistic storytelling and film production processes. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual, & Sports; Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director, Unscripted Content; Sandra Kleinfeld is Senior Director, Documentary; and Michelle McCree is Executive in Charge of Production, CBC Docs and The Passionate Eye.  Executive Producers for Saloon Media are Steve Gamester and Michael Kot. Inside the Statue Wars was produced with the participation of Canada Media Fund.

The deal will see the two entertainment companies adapting the popular comics, designed specifically for mobile phones, and bringing them to life as television series for international audiences.

Webtoons, originally designed for mobile phones, have developed a massive global fanbase and are becoming an exciting Asian entertainment category that is experiencing fast-growing international success.

Kenaz is one of the leading platforms for webtoons in Korea and the first Korean studio to provide webtoon IP to Apple Books. Working with Bros, Kenaz is expanding its webtoon film and television productions.

In Mirror Game, it’s an ultimate race against time when a Master illusionist with devious intentions becomes a viral sensation after successfully hypnotizing people online. In All About Money three best friends unexpectedly come across one billion dollars and are thrown into the illicit world of crime and corruption.

The original webtoons written and illustrated by Sunny and Baolong (Mirror Game) and BaStards and Siho (All About Money) have been consistently selected by writers and studios as two of the top 5 Kenaz titles to be adapted into a series.

The projects will be backed by Beach House Pictures who have been rapidly increasing investment into scripted development and productions internationally, releasing the series Mr Midnight on Netflix in 2022 and recently announcing an Ink Factory development deal for a television series of the iconic 70s Singapore action trilogy, Cleopatra Wong.
